General Information
Before Play
Dues must be paid to play with the RLGA; anyone playing once with the RLGA is liable for her dues for the current year.
Arrive at the golf course at least 30 minutes prior to your tee time.
- Check the flyer in the ladies lounge or pro shop to find out the tournament of the day.
Report to the starter 20 minutes prior to your tee time; latecomers may lose their tee times.
- Decide among your foursome who will keep the official scorecard. Also, have another member keep a second scorecard to double-check results.
Scoring Rules for Open Play (to maintain pace of play)
- Generally, the score to be posted on the tournament sheet in the ladies lounge is your adjusted score, according to the Equitable Stroke Control guidelines used for handicap purposes:
18 Hole Handicap 9 Hole Handicap Maximum Score
9 or less 4 or less Double-bogey
10 – 19 5 – 9 7
20 – 29 10 – 14 8
30 – 39 15 – 19 9
40 or more 20 or more 10
- If a player reaches her maximum score, she MUST pick up her ball and take her maximum score and mark her scorecard accordingly. For example, if your maximum score is 10, after your 9th stroke, pick up your ball and record (10x) for that hole.
- 12 inch putts may be given (outside edge of hole to front edge of the ball) with the consensus of the other players in the group. There is no measuring of the distance.
- If you don’t play a hole, the score to post is based on your handicap and is calculated based on the handicap ranking of the hole. For example, if you have a 36 handicap, you would post a double bogey for holes not completed (2 strokes x 18 holes = 36 strokes). If you have a 30 handicap, you would post a double bogey for handicapped holes numbering 1 - 12 (2 strokes x 12 holes = 24 strokes) and a bogey for handicapped holes numbering 13 – 18 (1 stroke x 6 holes = 6 strokes). The total strokes given are 30, which equals your handicap.
- Tie Break Rules: A match that ends all square should be decided by a match of cards. The tournament chairperson will employ a match of cards on the basis of the best score (gross minus ½ of each player’s handicap, including fractions if any) over the last nine holes. The last nine holes is defined as the holes 10 through 18 for the 18 hole league and as the holes 1 through 9 for the 9 hole league. If the tying players have the same net score for the last nine holes, then the winner will be determined on the basis of the last six holes, or the last three holes if still tied, or finally the 18th hole or 9th hole. If still tied, and no playoff was arranged, then the competition will conclude as tied.
- Exception to Scoring Rules: Some tournaments require that each hole be played to completion for the player to be in the tournament. These tournaments are identified in the weekly tournament rules.
Rules and Scoring for Match Play
- You must allow the person with the honors to tee off first and once the balls are in play, the person who is furthest away from the hole must hit first. If you play out of turn (on the tee, fairway or on the green), your opponent can make you re-hit your shot.
- If you can’t reasonably tie the hole, concede! Pick up your balls and move to the next hole.
- Don’t make your opponent putt really short putts.
- In match play, you continue playing until the hole is conceded or won, even if you reach your ESC. When you post your score, post the ESC score.
- If the hole is conceded at any point, determine a reasonable score you would have achieved on the hole if you had played it out.
- If it exceeds the ESC score, post the ESC score.
- If a putt is given and you believe you would have made that putt more than 50% of
the time, count the putt as made. If not, add 2 putts to your score for the hole.
- If you don’t play a hole, the score to post is based on your handicap and is calculated based on the handicap ranking of the hole. (See the example in the Open Play Scoring Rules.)
- Tie Break Rules: A match that ends all square should be played off hole by hole until one side wins a hole. The play-off should start on the hole where the match began. In the handicap match, handicap strokes should be allowed as in the prescribed round.
Scorecards and Posting Scores
- Valid scorecards must list legibly the first initial and last name of each player and the date of play.
- Please double-check your addition. You may save yourself a stroke!
- The scorekeeper and one other player (attester) must sign the scorecard.
- Post your Adjusted Score (Equitable Stroke Control) in the GHIN computer at the golf course or online at www.GHIN.com. Some of the tournaments will be identified as a “T” score for inputting into the GHIN system. (A 9 hole score can never be a “T” score.)
- Calculate and post weekly contest scores according to the directions on the tournament sheet in the ladies lounge. Use your course handicap posted in the ladies lounge when entering this information (for 18-holers, no greater than 36).
- Place the scorecard in the 9 hole or 18 hole box in the ladies lounge. If a valid scorecard is not turned in, you will not be eligible for prizes.
After Play
- By the end of each week, the winners for the tournament will be posted in the ladies lounge and on www.rlga.net
- If you are a winner, you will be given Pro Shop credit to be used to purchase items. The Pro Shop will be able to tell you what credit you have available to spend.

The team members must coordinate a date to play the match within the round deadline, and if possible, the match should be played on a day other than Tuesday. If the foursome must play on a regular Tuesday, please notify the tee time coordinators and your group will be put at the end of the tee time schedule. Each round will have approximately six weks to play the match. If a match is not able to be played by that round's play-by date, the match will be required to be played on the following Tuesday. If either palyer is unable to play that Tuesday, that player will forfeit. For official rules and more information, please visit www.rlga.net.
Four Person Captain’s Choice - April 5
- Four women per team. Teams are made up approximating an A-B-C-D level player structure for each group. Everyone tees off at each hole. The Captain picks the team’s best tee shot. Everyone then hits from that spot. The Captain picks the best second shot. Everyone hits from there…and so on until the ball is holed. All players may place their ball within 6 inches of the position marked from chosen previous shot, and not nearer hole. On the green, balls must be played from exact location marked.
- “Surface to Surface” Rule in effect. All players must hit from same type ground surface as from where the chosen previous shot came to rest -- if in rough, then all balls must now be hit from rough; if bunker, then all balls must be hit from bunker, etc.
- Scoring ball must be holed out on each hole.
- Each team must use at least two tee shots from each team member.
If Only - April 12
Post your gross score minus the score of the “worst” hole (you choose which hole). Then subtract your full handicap (no more than 36) for your net score.
Low Gross/Low Net - April 19
Put in both your gross (actual) score and your net score (gross score minus your handicap).
Front & Back Net- April 26
Enter scores for the front nine and the back nine separately. Prizes for gross and net.
Foursome Competition - Best 2 Net Balls of the Group - May 3
The best two net scores on each hole will count. Scorecards will be provided showing how many strokes each player gets on a hole. Play your regular game and record the net score for each hole in the box on the score card. If a group is not a foursome, a blind draw will be made after the end of the tournament giving that group a fourth member to be used in the competition. At the end of the competition, add up the total of the scores for your 2 best balls (indicate on scoring sheet in the locker room if you were less than a foursome).
Beat the Pro - May 10
The Pro will use his gross score. All RLGA members will use their net score. Let’s see who can beat him!
Blind Holes - May 17
Play your regular game and record your gross score. When you finish, you will be informed which holes to include in your scoring for the tournament. Eighteen holers will use 12 holes; 9 holers will use 6 holes.
Skins Game - May 24
Play your regular game and record your gross and net score for each hole. Skins will be determined once all players’ scores are recorded on the board. To win a skin you need to be the sole lowest net for the hole. If there is no sole winner on a hole, the skin carries to the next hole until there is sole winner.
Par Three’s are Free – May 31
Record scores on all holes except Par 3s. Subtract your handicap.
9/18 Combined - June 7
- Fun day with two 9 holers and two 18 holers on one team.
Same Ball – Off the Back – June 14
- Play will begin on the tenth hole. Start play with a ball clearly marked with an identifying symbol. When you lose that ball, write down on what hole and what shot the ball was lost (i.e. 14th hole, 2nd shot). The winner is whoever plays the most holes with the original ball. Ties will be broken on a low net basis.
Pinehurst – June 21
This is a 2-person tournament played as follows.
- Both players on a team tee off; i.e. Sharon and Carol both hit their tee shots.
- Each hits the other’s ball for their 2nd shot; i.e. Sharon hits a ball placed within 12 inches of Carol’s ball and Carol will hit a ball placed within 12 inches of Sharon’s ball. The ball must be placed in the same condition as the original ball – in the rough, sand, fairway, etc.
- The pair then chooses the best ball after the second shots.
- From that point on it is alternate shot (only one ball is played to finish the hole). The player whose second shot is selected cannot hit the next shot; i.e. if Sharon’s 2nd shot is chosen, Carol will hit the next shot, then Sharon, then Carol, etc., until the ball is holed.
- Only one combined score will be recorded for each hole.
- Post gross score minus 40% of combined handicap.
- If for some reason your partner can't make it, you will not be able to participate in the tournament, unless you link up with another player. You can still golf, but you will just be playing your own game.
Member/Guest – June 28
Details will be available during June.
Mid Season Hope – July 5

9 holers can elect to play in a 9/18 hole combined foursome for 18 holes or play as usual with just 9 holers for 9 holes. For those 9 holers electing to play in the combined foursomes, your tournament scores will be based on your first 9 holes and ranked against 9 holers only.
Individual Match Play vs. Par – August 9
Scorecards will be provided showing how many strokes you get for each hole. Compare your net score to par on each hole. Write both your gross and net score on the scorecard for each hole.
- If your net better ball beats par, then you win the hole. (+)
- If your net better ball equals par, then you push the hole. (no mark)
- If your net better ball is worse than par, then you lose the hole. (-)
At the end, total your pluses (+) and minuses (-) and record your final cumulative score.
Charity Day – August 16
Players who make a donation to a chosen local charity participate in “mini-competitions” throughout the course.
Four Person Best Ball – August 23

Four Clubs and A Putter – August 30

Better Ball of Two – September 6
The best net score on each hole between two players will count. Scorecards will be provided showing how many strokes each player gets on a hole. Play your regular game and record your gross score and net score for each hole in the box on the score card. At the end of the competition, add up the total for the twosome's better ball.
Power Player 4 – September 13
This is a four-person net team event. Each team member rotates being the power player. Two scores are recorded for each hole – one must be the power player’s score.
RLGA Club Championship – September 20, 23 and 27
This is a match play competition and a “T” score for 18 holers. To be eligible for the championship, a member must have:
- a valid handicap from the Ridgefield Golf Course;
- played at least five of the Tuesdays declared official league days.
If there is inclement weather on a club championship play date, refer to www.rlga.net to determine whether the championship will be played. The general rules to be followed for inclement weather if the course is open are:
- if no carts are allowed, play will be postponed to the following week or scheduled rain date;
- if carts are allowed, play will generally proceed as scheduled. The tournament chairperson has the right to postpone play to the following week or scheduled rain date if the weather forecast is extreme.
- If inclement weather occurs on the championship rain date, and the course is open, play will proceed whether carts are allowed or not.
Gruesomes - October 4
This is a two person tournament, played as follows:
Both players tee off and the opposing team decides which tee shot must be played. It is in the opposing team’s interest to select the more “gruesome” shot. The person who hit the “gruesome” tee shot must hit the second shot. Then finish out the hole in alternate shot fashion.
Flag Tournament – October 11
Each player will be given a flag at the beginning of the tournament. Record your name and magic number on the flag. Your magic number is your handicap (for 18 holers, no greater than 36) plus course handicap (73 for 18 holers, 35 for 9 holers). So, duh, if your handicap is 27 your magic number would be 100 (27 + 73).
Keep track of all strokes played. When your number of strokes equals your magic number, plant your flag, IN THE ROUGH ON THE LEFT SIDE OF THE FAIRWAY, NO CLOSER TO THE PIN THAN WHERE YOUR BALL LANDED. If your ball went into the woods on the right, still plant your flag next to the fairway to the left. Improperly placed flags will result in disqualification. So, no bunkers, greens, tee boxes, etc.
If you still have your flag at the end of 18 holes, write and circle your final score on the flag and place in box provided in the locker room.
Have fun!
Last Hope Tournament - October 18
This is a special competition for those who have not yet won any prize $$$. Post your gross score and net score. In addition there will be a prize for the overall low
net winner of the day for everyone who plays.
